• Background of the study
The paper and pen (manual) method of writing examination, which has been in existence for decades, may not be appealing for use because of the problems usually experienced including examination venue capacity constraints, lack of comfort for examination candidates, delay in the release of results, examination malpractices, cost implication of printing examination materials and human error. This brings about the need for automation of the examination system. Over the years, there have been various automated examination systems that have been developed with one or more limitations. Some of these limitations include lack of scalability, near-realibility, lack of robustness, lack of flexible timing functionality to automatically log-off candidates upon expiration of allotted time as a challenge (Ipaye, 2009); malpractice due to questions not randomly generated (Ayo et al, 2007); not well secured application domain in terms of data security and integrity (Levy & Ramim, 2007); most existing computer based test (CBT) systems are deployed as stand-alone applications that run on distributed networks making access to such applications restricted to the networked geographical domain and are only suited for the application environment only (Huszti & Petho, 2008). As such, no unified development model exists and this alone undermines the success of the e-examination platform for real-time adoption in practice. An online assessment however, is expected to offer several advantages for the institution and the learner. These include (Andrew et al, 2009):
Time analysis of responses to the question level to better discriminate between candidates
Including video in questions, particularly for scenarios in authentic assessment.
Adaptive testing, where the next question to be posed is determined by prior response(s).
Question banks and randomization of questions and response orders to reduce cheating.
Automated analysis of results from entire candidate cohorts.
Immediate feedback can be given.
In this project, a unified, scalable and flexible CBT system that addresses the aforementioned limitations of the some existing e-examination systems is developed. The conceptual design including the Data Flow Diagram (DFD), the Use Cases and the Entity-Relationship Model (ERM) for the system developed is also presented. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), PHP and Microsoft SQL are the tools used for the development of the online examination system. The result of the user assessment survey of the online examination system conducted indicates that setting, conducting and grading examination as well as generating and managing results become highly time-efficient, less prone to human error, more secured and at the comfort of both the lecturers and the students; thus preferred over the existing platforms for conducting examination.
• Statement Of Problem
The present problems associated with the conduct of examination for recruitment by different organization are inadequate examination halls or classrooms to check and control candidates during examination; impersonation in the examination hall; leakages of examination questions; mercenaries hired by registered job seeker to write the exam for them; bribing examination officials – supervisors and invigilators; desperation of friend and job seeker to buy live questions for their wards; conspiracy and collaboration of security agents and officials of public examination to compromise the integrity of the examination.
• OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The project is aimed of this study is to design and implement online examination staff recruitment system for Unilever PLC.
The following are the objectives of the study;
• To develop a system of examination model that is devoid of irregularities and generally fair to all applicants
• To explore the possibility of conducting a job seeker e-Examination;
• To investigate the level of ICT literacy of applicants.
• Significance Of The Study
The significance of the study is that it will bring to light the relevance of adopting online examination system for employee short-listing or e-recruitment system and the need for its adoption by organizations. It will help organizations solve the present challenges they are facing in attracting eligible and professional employees by providing a software system that processes the application of different applicants. It will also save them time and cost of recruiting. In addition, other scholars seeking for valuable information on the subject will find this research material relevant.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study is centered on the design and implementation of an online examination system for the recruitment of staff for Unilever PLC.
1.6 Limitation of the Study
Usually, every work has some limitations and this study is not exempted.
The two major limitations of this study are the high programming technique as well as financial constraints. The high programming technique constraint in PHP, JQUERY and MYSQL prevents the researcher to have an in depth study and analysis on the subject matter. While the issue of financial constraint limits the frequency of investigation to/from the institution toward gathering the necessary information relevant for the study.
1.7 Organization Of Research
This research work is organized into five chapters. Chapter one is concerned with the introduction of the research study and it presents the preamble, theoretical background, statement of the problem, aim and objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study, organization of the research and definition of terms.
Chapter two focuses on the literature review, the contributions of other scholars on the subject matter is discussed.
Chapter three is concerned with the system analysis and design. It presents the research methodology used in the development of the system, it analyzes the present system to identify the problems and provides information on the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed system. The system design is also presented in this chapter.
Chapter four presents the system implementation and documentation, the choice of programming language, analysis of modules, choice of programming language and system requirements for implementation.
Chapter five focuses on the summary, constraints of the study, conclusion and recommendations are provided in this chapter based on the study carried out.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Online: Refers to a system connected to the internet that can be accessed remotely from any part of the world.
Examination: A test designed to assess somebody’s ability or knowledge in a particular subject or field
Employment – the condition of working for pay
Application – a formal and usually written request for something such as a job, a grant of money, or admission to a school or college
Recruitment – to enroll somebody as a worker or member, or to take on people as workers or members
HTML CODE: – HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a type of computer language that is primarily used for files that are posted on the internet and viewed by web browsers. HTML files can also be sent via email.
Markup language: – A markup language is a combination of words and symbols which give instructions on how a document should appear. For example, a tag may indicate that words are written in italics or bold type.
Web browser: -A Web browser is a software program that interprets the coding language of the World Wide Web in graphic form, displaying the translation rather than the coding. This allows anyone to “browse the Web” by simple point and click navigation, bypassing the need to know commands used in software languages.
File extension: – A file extension is the suffix at the end of a filename that tells a computer, and the computer user, which program is needed to open the file. Also called a filename extension, this suffix preceded by at least one period, is generally one to five characters long but the norm is usually three characters in length.
Email: – Email, also sometimes written as e-mail, is simply the shortened form of electronic mail, a protocol for receiving, sending, and storing electronic messages. Email has gained popularity with the spread of the Internet. In many cases, email has become the preferred method of communication.
TCP/IP: – This often used but little understood set of operations stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. TCP/IP is the combination of the two and describes the set of protocols that allows hosts to connect to the Internet. In actuality, TCP/IP is a combination of “more than those two protocols, but the TCP and IP parts of TCP/IP are the main ones and the only ones to become part of the acronym that describes the operations involved.
TEXT FILE: – A text file is a computer file that stores a typed document as a series of alphanumeric characters, usually without visual formatting information. The content may be a personal note or list, a journal or newspaper article, a book, or any other text that can be rendered accurately in typewritten form.
Hyper Link:-A hyperlink is a graphic or a piece of text in an Internet document that can connect readers to another webpage, or another portion of a document. Web users will usually find at least one hyperlink on every webpage. The simplest form of these is called embedded text or an embedded link.
