CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1BACKGROUND OF STUDY Printers of any series are expensive and need proper and adequate maintenance so as to have long life span. Complex electronic devices that are neglected or not using correctly can result into serious and complex problems that will be difficult to solve for any investment. However, one can avoid the problem through proper setup, regular maintenance and consumables (Iromini, 2015). Since the beginning of 20th century man has tried to give acumen to its favourite servant i.e. the computer. This idea gave birth to the newest branch of science known as the “Artificial Intelligence” which has revolutionized the whole concept of thinking. By definition, Artificial Intelligence is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviours that humans consider intelligent. Broadly speaking, Artificial Intelligence is the combination of computer science, physiology and philosophy. The grounding principle of Artificial Intelligence is to make computers more useful and independent. In this way, computers will achieve the capability to imitate the human thinking process and will be able for strategic decisions-making. Finally a better understanding of AI is gained by looking at the component areas of study, such as robotics, memory organization, knowledge representation, storage and recall, learning models, common sense reasoning, understanding natural language, speech recognition and synthesis and variety of AI tools. The most integral branch of artificial intelligence is known as the “Expert System”. Some of the most exiting areas of the information technology include: Just-in-time (J.I.T) production techniques to reduce cost and improve quality; electronic shopping and electronic funds transfer; office automation and computer publishing; computer controlled commuter train system; decision support system (DSS) that enhance real time control of making under the battle field condition typically characterized by uncertainty; computer aids instruction (CAI) and aided manufacturing; computer aids to the handicapped including intelligent implants and experts medical diagnosis. Due to all these mentioned areas of computer application and more, computer has now been accepted and used by so many individuals and organizations for different purposes. It is accepted that computer is an agent which improves productivity and facilitates competition in our geographical environment. It is however worthy to note that 75% of all computer application generates documented information. This is why it is said that hard copy is the spice of information (Iromini, 2015). Computer generates printed report for adequate circulation and communication. This pointout the importance of printer in computerized operations and environments(Satvika,AkhilKaushik, 2012). Looking at the increasing number of malfunction ‘vis a vis’ the scanty availability of maintenance experts, these is no doubt that many important and urgent reports are either frustrated permanently or produced too late to serve their purpose. It has therefore become very imperative to develop this FARGO printer troubleshooting and maintenance expert system which will guide non-experts through a step by step approach to troubleshoot and maintain his/her FARGO printer. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM When printers malfunction, it is often challenging tracing the causes of such malfunction with respect to identified symptoms. Often, some of these faults are so minor that clearly every user ought to be able to handle them effectively without having to undergo the stress of finding maintenance experts. In many occasions, the faults are perfectly eliminated by clearing the edge connectors and resisting the plugs and printer interface cards. Some diagnostic software such as Qapuls could also help in locating the causes of the problems. However,the need for a reliable maintenance service cannot be over emphasized. Since it is necessary for good performance of any printer,also it is appropriate to observe that there is many other preventive maintenance procedures that can be duly appreciate by the user which could minimize printer failure. This project has been designed as preventive maintenance in a “DO IT YOURSELF FASHION”. It as well provides most of the outstanding information necessary to troubleshoot FARGO printer. 1.3 PURPOSE OF STUDY The purpose of this project or study is to give expert knowledge or guide on the rectification of several known faults commonly developed by Fargo printer and then develop an expert software system which will give any user the expertise knowledge to solve the problem of his/her printer. 1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVE The aims and objectives of this project are as follow: 1: To assemble a knowledge base that is common to the troubleshooting and maintenance of Fargo printers of diverse models. 2: To present this knowledge in a diagnostic format such that it will enable even non-expert to identify and correct minor problems of the printers especially. 3: When the maintenance experts are not handy, to provide a printer maintenance teaching aids on the basis of “DO IT YOURSELF”. 4: To emphasize the idea of preventive maintenance, especially as it effect fragile electronic of the ink of computer and printer. 1.5 SCOPE OF STUDY Even though there are several types – laser, dot-matrix, inkjet- and makes of printer Fargo, Epson, OK1, IBM, NEC, STAR, PANASONIC, CITIZEN, etc. For the purpose of this project, it has been designed to focus on the most common found (the Fargo dot-matrix printer). This option was chosen with the respect to the fact that this could be regarded as the economy class. Hence it needs as much guide as possible both in preventive and corrective maintenance. It is worth being mentioned that the project has been designed and mainly flow on the Fargo printers. The area of coverage is not very wide, however, since volume of books and journals are regularly on the issue. Hence this work shall not attempt to be exhaustive. 1.6 LIMITATION OF STUDY Usually, every work has some limitations and this study is not exempted. However, the research work cannot contain all it is suppose because of the following reasons or limitations. The three major limitations of this study are: 1: TIME FACTOR: The time constraint prevents the researcher to have an in depth study and analysis and therefore, making it impossible to go further on the subject matter. 2: UNAVAILABILITY OF THE NEEDED INFORMATION: Seeing that only a few engineering firms exist in this country, it was difficult for me to get much information for the work. 3: TIMITED RESOURCES: Because of the cost in transportation and other financial demands, it was not possible to get all the information needed for elaborate work. 1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS. EXPERT SYSTEM(ES): – The title of this work “expert system on trouble shooting and maintenance of Epson printer” presents a lot of computer words or term or jargon which need detailed explanation or definition for absolute comprehensive of this and topic and the intention of this work. WHAT IS EXPERT SYSTEM? According to Daniel L. Stotink and his friends in a book “computer and application an introduction to data processing” expert system is also a knowledge based system. It is a complex software(program),designed to imitate the thought processes and decision making patterns of human experts in a given field. The expert system is an off-string of artificial intelligence(AI) and it is developed using the programming technique of AI (Satvika, AkhilKaushik, 2012). KNOWLEDGE-BASE:-The repository in a computer of an expert knowledge in a given domain is a knowledge base. DOMAIN EXPERT:-It is not easy to effectively replace the human being with just one expert system rather a piece meal approach is used in which an expert system is instrumental for a narrow domain to imitate the human being activities at a time. REASONING BY INDUCTION:-If in an expert system past condition and corresponding decisions reach are stored such that where a new condition arises. The computer tries to match it with one of the previous condition, the approach is known as reasoning induction. HEURISTIC:-In general, the experience a human being acquires in any of human endeavorsare often in the form of rules of thumb which the human expert falls upon when confronted with a new but related situation. Such rules of thumb are known as heuristic in artificial intelligence terminology. TROUBLE-SHOOTING:- Is the act of detecting and mending faults be it a software or hardware facility. To be good trouble shooter one needed to understand a system better than average person. INFERENCE ENGINE:- The knowledge of an expert can be represented as a set of rules that allows the computer to make human like decision on the subject in other words, a knowledge – base can actually be in the form of rules and not only in the form of tables of information which can also be used as alternative approach. A computer program written to shift through the set of rules representing human expert knowledge so as to reach a decision on the current situation can be referred to as inference mechanic or inference engine. MAINTENANCE:-Maintenance is the performance of “preventive or remedial maintenance in order to prevent incipient hardware faults or to correct a hardware fault that has occurred”. We therefore define computer and printer maintenance as the prevention and correction faults in the system or knowing the fault that has occurred or that fault can occur. In definition, two kinds of maintenance can be identified. (i)PREVENTIVE:-This is knowing that faults can occur and taking steps to prevent occurrence. (ii)CORRECTIVE:-This knows that faults have already occurred and it has to be corrected. Also a definition of exactly what is (fault) or constitute a fault must be known. In essence, for maintenance to take place a description of the normal fault (its cause) and its remedy must be known.
