1.1Background of the study
Fleet management system is used for monitoring different kinds of motor vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks, aircraft (planes, helicopters etc.), ships as well as rail cars (Coffee et al, 2003). It has numerous applications such as vehicle maintenance (Pierro, and Schneider, 2001), vehicle tracking and diagnostics (Chou, 2001), improving driver performance (H. M. Molin, and K. D. Au, 2012), speed control and fuel management (B. G. Bates, 2000). Fleet Management is a function which allows companies which rely on transportation in business to remove or minimize the risks associated with vehicle investment, improving efficiency, productivity and reducing their overall transportation and staff costs, providing 100% compliance with government legislation (duty of care) (Dabbiere, 2001) and much more. These functions can be dealt with by either an in-house fleet management department or an outsourced fleet management provider (Coffee et al, 2003). The number of fleet management units deployed in commercial fleets in Europe will grow from 1.5 million units in 2009 to 4 million in 2014. Even though the overall penetration level is just a few percent, some segments such as road transport will attain adoption rates above 31 percent. All major truck manufacturers on the European market offer OEM telematics solutions as a part of their product portfolio. Mercedes-Benz (Brinkmeyer, 1998), Volvo and Scania launched their first products in the 1990s and followed by MAN in 2000, Renault
Trucks in 2004, DAF Trucks in 2006 and IVECO in 2008. The products are all supporting the FMS standard and can generally be deployed in mixed fleets even if some functionality can be brand-specific (Tarantilis, and C. T. Kiranoudis, 2002). A major trend in 2008 and 2009 has been the announcement of solutions for remote downloading of digital tachograph data and more advanced functionalities for eco-driving (I. Furgel, and K. Lemke, 2006).
Fleet (vehicle) management can include a range of functions, such as vehicle leasing and financing, vehicle maintenance, licensing and compliance, supply chain management, accident management and subrogation, vehicle telematics (tracking and diagnostics), driver management, speed management, fuel management, health and safety management, and vehicle re-marketing. Fleet Management is a function which allows companies which rely on transportation in business to remove or minimize the risks associated with vehicle investment, improving efficiency, productivity and reducing their overall transportation and staff costs, providing 100% compliance with government legislation (duty of care) and many more. These functions can be dealt with by either an in-house fleet-management department or an outsourced fleet-management provider. The number of light duty vehicles registered in commercial fleets in Europe as of 2016 was 15 million, and 19.5 million in North America Even with these record numbers of registration, light duty vehicles represent only 62% of all fleet sales.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In an organization running a transportation service, the process for searching truck details is slow if the company is using manual system where there are thousands of truck or even if it is few truck. Besides this, staffs will have to record the movement of truck manually and it will be difficult to produce a monthly report or an annual report. Manual system does not allow fleet manager to online record and hard to keep track on the record of truck. Consequently, difficulty in manual process makes the need for computerized web based application to be developed to solve manual problems in the area of truck management.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The aim of this study is to design and implement an online fleet management system.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The objective of this project is to:
1. Develop a simple and secure system that protects truck information and confidential information of the organization.
2. Develop a user-friendly system that enables manager or customer check for availability of vehicle, book or reserve a vehicle online.
3. Develop a system that enables clients pay their truck online.
4. Develop a system that stores bookings, reservation and payment information to keep track of transactions
1.5 Significance of the Study
The project is significant in the area of fleet management and tracking system to allow for easier access to customer and driver information and truck location to avoid stealing or abscond of customers or driver with truck. The project also can be adopted in any area of fleet or vehicle management that involve driver and customer taking such a product away from the location.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The research will center on the design and implementation of fleet management system for Abiolian Solution Limited. The system will be designed using MYSQL and PHP programming languages.
1.7 Limitation of The Study
Usually, every work some limitation and study is not exempted. The two major limitation of the study are the high programming technique as well as financial constraint. The high programming technique constraint is PHP and MySQL prevent the researcher to have in depth study and analysis of the subject matter. While the issue of the financial constraint limits of the frequency of investigation to/fro the organisation toward gathering the necessary information relevant for the study.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Truck: A truck or lorry is a motor vehicle designed to transport cargo. Trucks vary greatly in size, power, and configuration; smaller varieties may be mechanically similar to some automobiles.
Fleet: a number of vehicles or aircraft operating together or under the same ownership.
Management Information System: A management information system (MIS) focuses on the management of information systems to provide efficiency and effectiveness of strategic decision making.
HTML CODE: – HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a type of computer language that is primarily used for files that are posted on the internet and viewed by web browsers. HTML files can also be sent via email.
Markup language: – A markup language is a combination of words and symbols which give instructions on how a document should appear. For example, a tag may indicate that words are written in italics or bold type.
Web browser: -A Web browser is a software program that interprets the coding language of the World Wide Web in graphic form, displaying the translation rather than the coding. This allows anyone to “browse the Web” by simple point and click navigation, bypassing the need to know commands used in software languages.
File extension: – A file extension is the suffix at the end of a filename that tells a computer, and the computer user, which program is needed to open the file. Also called a filename extension, this suffix preceded by at least one period, is generally one to five characters long but the norm is usually three characters in length.
Email: – Email, also sometimes written as e-mail, is simply the shortened form of electronic mail, a protocol for receiving, sending, and storing electronic messages. Email has gained popularity with the spread of the Internet. In many cases, email has become the preferred method of communication.
TCP/IP: – This often used but little understood set of operations stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. TCP/IP is the combination of the two and describes the set of protocols that allows hosts to connect to the Internet. In actuality, TCP/IP is a combination of “more than those two protocols, but the TCP and IP parts of TCP/IP are the main ones and the only ones to become part of the acronym that describes the operations involved.
TEXT FILE: – A text file is a computer file that stores a typed document as a series of alphanumeric characters, usually without visual formatting information. The content may be a personal note or list, a journal or newspaper article, a book, or any other text that can be rendered accurately in typewritten form.
Hyper Link:-A hyperlink is a graphic or a piece of text in an Internet document that can connect readers to another webpage, or another portion of a document. Web users will usually find at least one hyperlink on every webpage. The simplest form of these is called embedded text or an embedded link.
