1.1 Background of the Study 

Kevin Ashton is the first to use the Internet of Things (IoT) in 1999. The IoT defined by the researchers in many methods like the Internet of People, Internet of Anything, Internet of Everything, Internet of Marks, Internet of Data, and the Internet of Services (Gul, 2017 and Gubbi, 2013). The Internet of Things (IoT) is an international network which combines things, and materials to the Internet support to interact or communicate with the environment (Stankovic, 2014; Tan and Koo, 2014). The basic concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the pervasive existence in a variety of objects or things (Bari, 2013). Thus, the IoT objects is much wider, indication to physical things, for example, people, cargos, and products that can be determined by different type of devices such as sensors, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, actuators, mobile phones, smart cards, GPS devices, and so on (Atzori, 2010). The objects can react with others and collaborate with their neighbors to achieve participating goals (Cata, 2015). After reviewing many studies, we found several common problems in education systems, including students who live in remote areas where transportation is limited or students who have health disabilities cannot attend to the campus. Sometimes there is difficulty in assessing students ’performance when performing laboratory experiments accurately in terms of calculating the number of attempted times and the time taken to implement them (Elyamany and Alkhairi, 2015). Students who are unable to attend campus as a result of a particular circumstance need to accurately compensate for their missed scientific lectures (Ralhan, 2017). The devices (lighting, air conditioning, display screens, laboratory equipment, etc.) that are working continuously on the university campus without the need for them, will lead to consuming more electrical energy. When a person becomes a prospective student in any institution of higher learning, a record contains the information about the student like: full name, sex, date of birth, marital status, religion, state of origin, nationality, permanent addressed e.t.c.  Student registration system could be defined however as a means of providing adequate resources for analyzing, designing and recording student-related records like: student registration procedure, payment system as well as their academic records.

A well organized and automated student registration system will  equip the institution with relevant information so as to  make a strict all vision to any student in cases of emergency and also to  prevent the occurrence of certain academic vices like: certificate forgery,  other illegal academic qualifications as in case of one former speaker of the  house of representative Alhaji Salisu Buhari who claimed to have graduated from  University of Toronto but as result of proper finding, he resigned from office over allegations of certificate forgery. Well automated student registration system the institution was bequeathed with, they were able to detect easily that he had no academic record in the aforementioned institution.

1.2 Statement of the problem

 The manual system of student registration has been found to be cumbersome, tedious and time-consuming. The mode of storage and retrieving of student’s registration is inadequate. It is done manually by clerical staff and this leads to unavailability of a centralized pool of student according to their specific duration of programme. Also, the awarding of grades is manual, the scores and marks of the student are word processed and the result is printed out. Hence the need for the automation of the system is expedient.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

This project work main objective is to design and implement student registration information using internet of things and also aimed at producing a system that will eliminate the difficulties and unnecessary protocols inherent in the existing system. From the feasibility study the researcher took, he came out with an alternative which is much better in terms of cost-effectiveness, time-saving, reliability and clarity of output, with the objective of:

1. To create a database per the registration procedure of the institution through internet of a things

2. To create a file that will handle the payment of fees by the student via online

3. To create a file for the academic records of the student into an appropriate

4. To convert the scores of each offered by the student into an appropriate grade.

1.4 Scope of the Study

This section gives a brief outline of the extent of which the project covers. The project starts with the introduction of the study, aims and benefit of the project. It also covers the literature review, brief explanation of the existing system, data collection methods as the computers requirement will be used in the new design. It also pays attention to the method used in collecting data analysis of the proposed system and design. It also takes care of the implementation and the control system. Finally, it makes conclusion, recommendation as well as appendix, more importantly; due to time constraint and other factors, the project cannot be generalized. It is only restricted to the faculty of information and communication technology.

1.5 Significance of the study 

Having achieved the aims of the project, the following benefits are derived:

1. It quickens the registration procedure.

2. It leads to the avoidance of duplication of efforts

3. It provides facilities for the decision-making process

4. It controls redundancy (duplication of data)

5. It reduces the cost of labour force responsible for scoring and awarding of grades is greatly reduced.

6. It reduces inefficiency and inaccuracy

7. It prevents loss of data i.e. data during completion of forms in the manual registration process

8. It generally saves time.         

1.6     Limitation of the Study

Usually, every work has some limitations and this study is not exempted.

The two major limitations of this study are the high programming technique as well as financial constraints. The high programming technique constraint in PHP, JQUERY and MYSQL prevents the researcher to have an in depth study and analysis on the subject matter. While the issue of financial constraint limits the frequency of investigation to/from the institution toward gathering the necessary information relevant for the study.

1.7     Definition of Terms

Computer Network: Computer Network is a system that connects two or more computers together using a communication link.

Internet of Things: The Internet of things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects—a.k.a. “things”—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.

Internet: is the computer network which allows computer users to connect with computers all over the world, and which carries e-mail.

Design: it is a detail plan or arrangement to achieve a particular purpose.

Implementation:  is the carrying out execution or practice of a plan. 

Transaction: is a piece of business, for example an act of buying or selling something.

Student: is a person who is studying at a university or college.

Lecturer: is a teacher at a university or college

Institution: is a large important organization such as a university, church or bank.

Database – a collection of data neatly organized which stores the operational records

Portal – presents information from diverse sources in a unified way. Apart from the standard search engine feature, web portals offer other services such as e-mail, announcements, discussion board, registration, inquiry, information, databases and entertainment.

Registration – students or faculty members submits personal information to be a member to have an access inside the campus course portal.

World Wide Web: World Wide Web simply called www is the most important tool of the Internet. It was created in the late 1980s in Europe and was used limitedly in academic cycle.

Databases: A systematically arranged collection of computer data, structured so that it can be automatically retrieved or manipulated. It is also called databank.

File Transfer: Any kind of computer file can be sent via the Internet from one Internet user to another. Table of accounts on spreadsheets, design by a graphic artists, music sound files etc, can all be exchanged in this way.

Web Brower: This is a special kind of software that processes hypertext make-up language (HTML) document. In other words, a web browser is a computer program that interprets HTML command to collect, arranged and display the parts of a web page.
