Design of a medium ship yard
Price: 4000 Naira (BSC, MSC)
1.1 Background of the Study
For several decades, Asian nations such as Korea, Japan and China have been leading the shipbuilding industry since the decline in Europe and America. However, several developing countries such as India, Brazil, etc. are going to make an entrance into the shipbuilding industry. These developing countries are finding technical partners or information providers because they are in situation of little experiences and technologies.
In the Middle East and South Asia, growth in container port demand has accelerated in recent years. This has been driven by strong oil prices, a measure of deregulation and investment in the Indian subcontinent and the integration of the region into the major east-west trades. Whilst demand is very strong in India, the capabilities of its ports and terminals remain limited, and the connectivity of these facilities with major hinterland markets is under mounting pressure. The planned major investment will need to be realized to accommodate anticipated growth, and coping with congestion will require a transformation of terminal productivity. For these reasons Indian Government is encouraging private & public sector organizations to establish shipbuilding facility to fulfill the demand of commercial & even defense ships .
The shipping industry plays a fundamental role in societies and globaleconomy, supporting international trade activities between geographic locations. The increasing environmental concerns, driven by regulations andmarket factors, requires the shipping industry to change towards becomingmore sustainable and environmental friendly . Research performed by theInternational Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2014 shows that the shippingindustry accounts for approximately 2,6% of the total global carbon dioxide(CO2) emission in 2012 .
While there is now a rich literature reflecting the sustainability of ships[27, 31], especially in its operational phase , little work of this kind has focusedon the sustainability of shipyards. With such a large focus dedicatedto increase efficiency and an effective use of fossil fuels during the ships operation, other avenues of avoiding the climate change are apparently oftenoverlooked .
1.2 Aim and Objective of the Study
In this study, the main aim and objective has been set as the designing of a medium sized shipyard capable of building up to six vessels of same type and functions. The specific objective of this study are:
1. To outline a concept applying modern manufacturing techniques to the development of a mechanized medium sized shipyard for the construction of ships.
2. To provide a preliminary assessment of the shipyard capital cost and it’s production rate.
3. To provide building section technology.
1.3 Significance of the Study
This research will help individual and organization to know more about the history about shipbuilding and shipyardand also give in-depth incited on the design phase, Shipyard layout design and Production area calculation .This research will add to the body of knowledge because there is a few literature on this topics.
1.4 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is design of a medium ship yard. This research focus on design phase, Shipyard layout design and Production area calculation and history on shipyard and previous research related to this topic.
1.5 Limitations of the Study
This research is restricted to design of a medium ship yard. In carrying out this research other factors served as constraints: financial limitation, inadequate time.
1.6 Definition of Terms
Shipyard: is a place where ships are built and repaired. These can be yachts, military vessels, cruise liners or other cargo or passenger ships.
Vessel:is a large watercraft that travels the world’s oceans and other sufficiently deep waterways, carrying passengers or goods, or in support of specialized missions, such as defense, research and fishing.
Cargo:in particular to goods or produce being conveyed – generally for commercial gain – by water, air or land.
Shipbuilding:is the construction of ships and other floating vessels. It normally takes place in a specialized facility known as a shipyard.
Dry-dock:is a narrow basin or vessel that can be flooded to allow a load to be floated in, then drained to allow that load to come to rest on a dry platform.
