ABSTRACT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The concept of sport tourism is a complex one and much of this complexity emanates from the difficulties in defining the concept. The paper will first briefly examine previous research, definitions of sport tourism and the range of perspectives on this concept. Finally, the paper provides a framework and new definition for sport tourism that has as its core element, sport event tourism.

The paper argues that sport – within a sport tourism framework- is competitive sport and does not include recreational activities that have previously been included in many definitions thereby making them too broad to be of substantial use in empirical research.

Previous Research

A number of models or frameworks have been developed for the concept of sport tourism and Faulkner, Tideswell and Weston discuss the merits and deficiencies of the various definitions provided by researchers such as Gibson, Gammon and Robinson and Hall.

Faulkner et al for example, argue that the “Tourism sport” category of Gammon and Robertson is too broad – an example is the inclusion of activities such as walking, which is a recreational activity that should not be classified as sport tourism.
